Despite an unfavorable climate and heavy clay soil, the recovery seems to be off to a good start with an encouraging white flowering in the first season.

Description

Viburnum plicatum 'Watanabe' is a bush with a beautiful layered habit, astonishing white flowering in May and vibrant autumn colours.

This deciduous Chinese Viburnum has horizontal branches, 10cm (3.9in) long, slender, deeply veined leaves that are dark green turning purple in autumn. In May, numerous inflorescences of 8cm (3.1in) develop at the end of the stems in spherical, flat corymbs, pure white in colour and do not produce fruit.

This slow-growing Viburnum can reach a height of 2 to 3m (6ft 7in - 9ft 10in). It thrives in all rich, moist, well-drained soils in sunny or semi-shaded locations. Pruning involves removing dead wood and some old branches every 3 years after flowering.

Viburnum Plicatum 'Watanabe' elegantly accompanies plants in acid soil and Hydrangea.

Tips: To stimulate flowering, enrich the soil with potash fertilizer in late winter.

Planting and care

Viburnum plicatum 'Watanabe' should be planted in autumn in a moist, rich, and well-drained soil in a sunny or semi-shaded location, spacing them 80cm (31.5in) apart in all directions. Adding compost is necessary during planting. Water generously and mulch the soil to maintain freshness. Prune the faded flowers and remove any old, excessive, misshapen, or diseased branches. Beware of black aphids on the bean plant! Spray a solution of black soap (30g/l of water) as soon as they appear.
