Description

The Hydrangea macrophylla 'La Vie en Rose' is part of a series of recent French creations, each more original than the next, ideal for personalising your decor in the garden and indoors. With a decidedly romantic style, this hydrangea is adorned with beautiful ball-shaped flower heads where variegated florets of tender pink and white cluster together, becoming more pink towards the end of the season. This hydrangea is perfect for small, well-maintained gardens and terraces with classic pastel decor. It forms a compact bush with sturdy stems and highly dissected foliage, making it ideal for brightening shaded areas. The plant thrives in non-chalky soils with good water retention.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'La Vie en Rose' is a unique hydrangea with eye-catching pink and white striped flowers. It was created through cross-breeding between H. macrophylla and H. serrata species, among others. These hardy plants are native to China and Japan and belong to the hydrangea family.

'La Vie en Rose' is one of the cultivars in a group known for their sturdy stems, prolific blooming, and versatility to be grown indoors and outdoors. The plant has a regular, rounded, and elegant shape with a compact size, reaching up to 1 metre (3 to 4 feet) in all directions at maturity. It grows at a moderate pace.

From July to September-October, the plant produces small, fertile and sterile flowers that form tight, ball-shaped inflorescences of substantial size (12 to 15 cm). The flowering period lasts over the plant's glossy, dark green, deciduous foliage. The leaves have a highly dissected appearance with coarse, saw-like teeth and grow opposite each other, reaching a length of about ten centimetres minimum.

The 'La Vie en Rose' Hydrangea is a plant that boasts a refined and assertive personality. It is a feminine bush that can add a touch of elegance to your garden, terrace, or home when placed in a beautiful jar. Hydrangeas are known for brightening up the north side of houses, but this variety can thrive in a protected east or west exposure, whether in full sun or partial shade and can be grown in flowerbeds or as a standalone plant. It is well-suited for container cultivation and can be planted in a beautiful pot or near the entrance. Although these plants do not like lime, they are not strictly acid-loving. You can pair them with Magellan fuchsias, annual impatiens, or plant spring-flowering bulbs in front of their rounded silhouette. Enjoy their sumptuous flowering for a long time in the garden or indoors.

Planting and care

Hydrangea macrophylla 'La Vie en Rose' should be planted during spring or early autumn, preferably in a slightly shaded location against an east- or north-facing wall. In very cold regions, it may be wise to overwinter the plant in a cold greenhouse or conservatory, even though it can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C. It should be protected from cold and drying winds. The plant does not require ericaceous soil but appreciates deep, moist, and well-drained soil that is reasonably fertile. Before planting, it is recommended to improve the soil with a good base fertiliser. If the soil is dry at the base of the wall, plant the root ball at least 30-40 cm (11.8 - 15.7 in) away from the base and incorporate a good amount of well-rotted compost to retain moisture. Hydrangea macrophylla 'La Vie en Rose' is very hardy and can be planted in cold regions without fear. To prune your plant, remove the faded flowers on the topmost bud or the pair of buds directly below it. Next, cut back to the base by a quarter or one-third of the oldest stems. This will encourage the formation of young shoots. It's best to perform this pruning annually between March and April.
