More information

This hydrangea has a compact habit and well-branched structure. Throughout summer, it produces beautiful hemispherical inflorescences of large bi-coloured florets clustered together. Their colour ranges from blue bordered with white in acidic soil to pink bordered with white in neutral soil. The bush develops strong stems that do not droop under the weight of the flowers. Perfect in large flowering pots, it is also an excellent bush for shaded borders, in rich and well-drained soil that does not dry out in summer. It can also be grown indoors.

Description

Hydrangea macrophylla Beautensia® 'Dali ' is a new bush that is characterised by a compact habit and distinctly bi-colour flowering. It has a compact and rounded habit, and excellent durability. From June onwards, it forms numerous hemispherical inflorescences of large florets. These tightly packed florets are blue to pink depending on the soil, bordered with white. Like all hydrangeas, it prefers moist, limestone-poor, neutral to acidic soils. It is well adapted to small spaces and container gardening. It will find its place in a large pot on a terrace or balcony, as well as in partially shaded beds. Its flowers are absolutely stunning in bouquets.

'Dali' is a recent creation of the Beautensia series of hydrangeas. It is compact, unique, hardy, and easy to grow. It is a hybrid obtained through the cross-breeding of hardy varieties belonging to the Hydrangeaceae family, native to China and Japan. This small bush has a rounded habit supported by sturdy stems that easily bear the weight of the flowers. Slightly narrower than tall, it will reach approximately 1.2m (4ft) in height and 1m (3ft) in width when fully grown, slightly smaller in a pot, depending on growing conditions. Its flowering begins in June on older branches and continues until September on new shoots. Its sterile florets measure 4.5 to 5cm (2in) in diameter. They are tightly packed on hemispherical inflorescences measuring 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) in diameter. As is often the case with hydrangeas, the flower colour depends on the soil pH. The flowering stands against elegant dark green foliage, which turns yellow in autumn before falling. The leaves are opposite, reaching about 15cm (6in) in length. They are simple, ovate to elliptical, ending in a pointed tip, with strongly serrated edges. Hydrangeas can live for at least 50 years.

'Dali' brings elegance and whimsy to the range of ball hydrangeas. It has excellent hardiness, maintains a neat appearance in all circumstances, and offers a sculptural flowering. Hydrangeas are well known for brightening the north side of houses. This one will thrive in a non-burning east or west exposure, in beds as well as in small hedges. This variety is suitable for growing in the ground or in containers, which can be placed on a terrace or near an entrance. This variety also adapts to indoor cultivation, provided it is overwintered in an unheated room. Although hydrangeas are sensitive to limestone, they are not strictly acid-loving plants. They thrive in all good non-calcareous garden soils. Pair them with Magellan fuchsias or annual impatiens, or plant spring-flowering bulbs and lilies in front of their round silhouette. Enjoy their magnificent flowering for a long time in the garden or in the house.

Planting and care

Plant in spring or early autumn, preferably in a semi-shaded position, for example against an east-facing, west-facing, or even north-facing wall. It can tolerate morning sun, in a non-scorching exposure. Keep it protected from cold and drying winds. It does not require ericaceous soil, but appreciates deep, cool, well-drained, fairly fertile soil, possibly enriched with a good base fertiliser before planting. If planting near a wall and the soil is dry at its base, place the root ball at least 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in) away from it and incorporate a quantity of well-decomposed compost to better retain moisture in the soil. Very hardy, it is not afraid to be planted in cold regions.

As for pruning, remove the faded flowers on the first bud or on the pair of buds directly below. When the plant is mature, prune the older stems back to the base by a quarter or a third. This will encourage the formation of young shoots. Carry out this pruning every year during March and April.
