Description

Small evergreen undershrubs or deciduous perennials with delicate flowers. These very beautiful shade plants can be grown in borders, or in a large shaded rockery, preferably on the edge of a path to fully enjoy their great beauty. They withstand temperatures as low as -12°C (10.4°F), -13°C (8.6°F) without any protection. The highly cold-resistant western species can withstand difficult conditions, such as living in dense shade under trees, in very dry or moist clay soil. The Asian species prefer a soil that remains wet to moist in summer, well-drained, rich in humus, without limestone, and also tolerate dense shade. They all grow relatively slowly, but they live for many years without any special care.

Vigorous crowm quickly forming beautiful clumps of evergreen, glossy, arrow-shaped leaves, 14 cm (6in) long and 4.5 cm (2in) wide, with mildly spiny edges, apple green at first and then becoming dark green. Pendulous flowers with pure white sepals and wine-red rolled-up petals, similar in appearance to those of E. dolichostemon, but flatter, with white stamens.
