Description

The monarda or Purple Bergamot is an annual plant distinguished by its striking flowers.

This monarda can reach 70 cm in height with a spread of 25cm (9.8 in), and it is very compact. The leaves are lanceolate and it has very distinctive flower heads, each consisting of a large number of tubular flowers, rising from a central point, all in the form of different tiers. The flowers appear from June to August and they are purple pink in colour.

The monarda can be used to create impressive flower beds. This generous plant also looks great in rockeries, meadows, and lawns, or even in pots.

Our advice: Remove faded flowers to prolong flowering.

Note: Attention, our young plug plants are professional products best suited for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in  a sheltered spot (conservatory, greenhouse, frame...) at a temperature higher than 14°C/57.2°F for a few weeks before they are planted outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Bergamo Monarda can be planted from April to June in a sunny or partially shaded spot. It is a good plant for flower beds and containers.

In containers: Use a garden potting compost or a compost for indoor flowering plants. Water regularly while allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Apply fertilizer every 15 days. We recommend removing faded flowers to prolong flowering.

Its advantages: good coverage in the garden and strong resistance to powdery mildew.
