Description
Leonotis nepetifolia is a large perennial of tropical origin, usually grown as an annual in our climate. Fast-growing and flowering from summer after an early sowing in the warm, it has a charming, architectural presence. The plant, with its long, slender stems and fairly dark green leaves, produces curious orange flowering in whorls arranged in tiers along the upper part. Ideal for adding an exotic touch to a border, it will also look at home in a contemporary garden. Frost-tender, it can only be planted outdoors in the most sheltered gardens. Elsewhere, it can be grown as a perennial to overwinter under cover, or more simply as an annual.
Leonotis belongs to the large Lamiaceae family, rich in 7,500 species, including many aromatic plants (Mint, Rosemary, Oregano...) as well as ornamental plants, such as the graceful Perovskias or Callicarpa with its decorative berries, formerly classified among the Verbenaceae. There are only about ten species of Leonotis, the most widespread being Leonotis leonurus, or Lion's Tail, a general common name that also refers to Leonotis nepetifolia (literally with Nepeta-like leaves). This tall perennial is native to tropical East Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda) and, due to its abundant seed production and rapid growth, has become naturalised in many warm regions of the globe (Asia, Oceania, the Caribbean...). In these climates, it can reach 2.50 m to 3m in height, whereas it will most often reach 1.50 m or 2m in the Mediterranean. In tropical climates, it is a short-lived perennial plant. In our climate, we can grow it as an orangery plant to enjoy it for 2 or 3 years by overwintering it frost-free. Sown early in spring, the plant develops very quickly, forming a 70 to 90cm wide clump. The square-sectioned stems (a fairly common characteristic of the Lamiaceae) are relatively sturdy, but can break in strong winds. They bear opposite leaves, arranged in pairs, triangular or diamond-shaped in outline. The fairly dark green leaf has a toothed margin and a slightly rough surface. When crushed, the leaves release a slight scent, of no particular aromatic interest. Flowering takes place from July to October in our latitudes, in the form of whorls of cymes. These spherical inflorescences resemble small green sea urchins with orange tubular flowers approximately 2cm long. With a total diameter of around 5cm, the spiny inflorescences are arranged like the tiers of a pagoda at the tips of the tall, well-erect stems. Their warm colour is clearly visible from afar, creating a pleasing contrast against the darker vegetation. Renewing themselves over several months in the garden, they can be used to make lovely flower arrangements, fresh or dried, as their sculptural quality is very useful in floral art.
Sowing Leonotis nepetifolia is easy and, at little cost, you can obtain a quantity of young plants that will create a fine splash of colour in an exotic-inspired border. You can pair it with other distinctive plants such as the spectacular Castor Oil plants with their large palmate leaves, or the Cleomes whose flowers exude a spider-like grace, such as the variety 'White Queen', whose white flowers will blend harmoniously with the orange ones of your Lion's Tail.

Planting and care
The seeds of Leonotis nepetifolia can be sown in warmth indoors, or later, outdoors.
1/ Indoors: in March-April, fill a seed tray or box with a light, well-draining mix, such as fine potting compost with sand; scatter the seeds and cover them very lightly with substrate (3mm).
Mist the surface regularly to keep the substrate slightly moist (without overdoing it) and maintain the tray at 20-25°C (you can place it in a propagator).
Germination typically occurs between 15 and 21 days after sowing, with a fairly high success rate of 70 to 90%.
Once the young plants have developed 3-4 true leaves, transplant them into individual pots to grow them on, then (after the last frosts), plant them in the garden (for annual cultivation) or in a container (to overwinter them under cover and enjoy them the following year, as the plant is perennial).
2/ Outdoors: wait until the frosts are finished and the soil has warmed, then sow directly in a sunny spot.
The plant grows quickly to reach 1.50 to 2m in height in warm climates and flowers abundantly from summer onwards.
In very mild climates, it can self-seed spontaneously if the autumn is long and mild, but in cooler climates, the seeds do not survive the winter.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
