More information

Areas exposed to the north are always difficult to manage. This mix of perennial and annual plants has been designed to create uniform floral decoration in sites exposed to both light and shade. The varied flowering periods range from June to September. Sow the seeds preferably in September-October or in March-April, broadcast onto well-prepared and loosened soil. One box covers approximately 3m².

Description

This North-facing Flower Meadow Mix is a blend of low-maintenance plants that tolerate both shade and sun. Easy to grow in regular soil and requiring very little maintenance, they can be sown directly in place, preferably at the end of summer or in early spring, in well-prepared soil. This flowerbed will bloom in summer for several years (at least two), and will also provide a refuge for wildlife.

This selection consists of 27 species of perennial and annual plants. Annuals bloom 6 to 8 weeks after sowing while the perennial plants, which live for several years, will flower from the second spring onwards. All these plants show rather rapid growth and some self-seed spontaneously in the garden, in regular and well-drained soil. One seed box can cover approximately 3 square metres. The height of flowering plants varies from 50 to 80 cm (20 to 32in).

Sample composition: Digitalis purpurea, Borago officinalis, Myosotis alpestris, Malva sylvestris, etc.

Flower meadows combine the useful with the pleasant: blooming throughout the entire summer while requiring very little maintenance, they bring the charm of the countryside to the garden. Ideal for adding colour and life to a slightly wild and shaded area, for example at the edge of a woodland or along a sun-deprived wall, this mix also helps attract bees and beneficial insects to the garden.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Sow directly in place from September to October or from March to early June, in well-prepared soil, free from weeds, refined and raked. Sow finely on the surface of the soil and lightly rake to cover the seeds. Optionally, use a roller to ensure good seed adhesion to the soil. Germination normally takes 14 to 30 days. Regularly water with a fine spray to keep the soil slightly moist until germination.

Cultivation:
When young plants appear, water well and remove weeds. Water regularly. Once established, the plants rely on rainwater. In autumn, at the end of flowering, seeds can be collected and sown elsewhere. Water well to ensure seed adhesion to the soil.
