Description

The Triumph Tulip 'Supermodel' is a beautiful selection, still rarely seen in shops. Its slightly flared corolla shows ivory white petals with a wide band of soft pink on the edge, giving it a somewhat "strawberries and cream" look. It flowers in the middle of the tulip season, from early to mid-spring, depending on the climate. Perfect for bouquets or dazzling borders.

The Triumph Tulip 'Supermodel' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is to have narrow cup-shaped flowers. They are the result of cross-breeding between early single tulips and Darwin tulips. With a variety of colours, solid and resistant flowers, suitable for both flower beds and bouquets, the fame of Triumph tulips is well established. They are among the most planted varieties.

Unmatched for bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens, don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make beautiful cut flowers that last a long time in a vase.

Tulip species are found from Western Europe to China and Japan, through Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution area also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is located in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

In Europe, there are various wild species, many of which are endangered. These are either large adventive tulips from cultivated fields, the most well-known being the Agen tulip (Tulipa agenensis), or small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, they are called "botanical tulips," and one of the most common is the wild tulip (Tulipa sylvestris), which used to often grow sheltered by vines and whose subspecies australis is known as the southern tulip.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips will thrive in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant them in a sunny or semi-shaded position. Once flowering is finished, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
