Description
The Olearia lepidophylla is a small evergreen bush from Australia that is still relatively unknown but should appeal to enthusiasts of graphic and unusual plants. Composed of white and cottony branches with very discreet small leaves, it offers a silver-like vegetation. It is adorned with small flowers that can evoke snowflakes in summer, enhancing its charm. The Australian flora holds beautiful surprises for mild climates and seaside gardens. And this Olearia, very comfortable in dunes and well-draining soils, is undoubtedly part of it. It can also be grown in pots, bringing a graphic touch to the terrace or balcony during the summer.
The Olearia lepidophylla belongs to the family of Asteraceae. It is native to Western and Southern Australia, where it can be found on dunes and in low coastal hills, growing in sandy clay on a limestone substrate. It is a low bush, often wider than it is tall, reaching about 60 cm (24in) in height and 1m (3ft) in width, sometimes more depending on the growing conditions. Its dense vegetation consists of thin, ramified branches covered in white, glandulous tomentum. Its tiny leaves, less than 5 mm (1in) long and without petioles, are clustered on the stems and persist throughout winter. Flowering occurs from June to August, depending on the climate. It takes the form of small white capitula with a yellow center that turns pink-lilac, measuring 7 mm (1in) in diameter.
Hardy up to about -8°C (17.6°F), the Olearia lepidophylla will naturally find its place in a seaside garden where it will form a small protective screen. In a low hedge, it can be used in combination with other evergreen bushes such as Atriplex halimus, compact Leptospermum, Polygala myrtifolia, or myrtles, for example. Its silhouette pairs well with that of Melaleuca gibbosa and Eriostemon myoporides.

The Olearia lepidophylla will thrive in a rather light, sandy, well-drained soil, occasionally dry to moist. It tolerates summer drought and poor soils quite well. Limestone is not a problem. It tolerates sea spray very well. Plant it after the last frosts in colder regions and in September-October in warmer climates. It will flourish in the sun. Under these conditions, it is hardy to around -8°C (17.6°F) (some sources indicate -12°C (10.4°F)). However, it will be necessary, in cold regions, to cultivate it in a large pot to store it during the winter, in a bright, but unheated, room. To shape and densify it, you can prune the stems in March-April each year to encourage the plant to branch out. If not pruned, the Olearia lepidophylla may have an irregular habit.
Cultivation in pots:
Provide good drainage at the bottom of the pot, which should be of a large volume (20 liters). Use a light substrate, enriched with coarse sand and leaf compost, and apply a slow-release fertilizer in late winter and autumn. Water regularly in summer, allowing the soil to dry out a little between waterings.
Diseases and pests:
Scale insects sometimes attack the Olearia. Regularly inspect the stems and undersides of the leaves to detect this pest which forms shields or clusters with a powdery appearance. Apply an anti-scale treatment. In case of severe infestation, prune the plant just above the last bud located near the base of the stem.

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.

Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
