Pruning: 80 cm (32in). Two branches broken at the end. Nothing serious. The young plant needs to recover well. I'm doing everything I can. We'll see in the spring.

Description

The Magnolia sieboldii forms a small tree with a spreading habit, adorned with flowers in inverted cups, white with a purple heart, delicately scented.

Native to Asia, the Magnolia sieboldii reaches a height of 5m and a width of 4m at maturity. The oval-shaped, medium green leaves measure 10 to 15cm (3.9 - 5.9 in) in length and 6 to 8cm (2.4 - 3.1 in) in width. The pure white flowers adorned with a cluster of purple stamens form a wide bell shape, blooming from May to July and particularly tolerant of inclement weather. They emit a subtle citrus fragrance.

Completely hardy, this species requires a partially shaded location, as well as a cool, light and humus-bearing soil, it does not tolerate lime-rich soils well. With a slow growth rate, it can be grown in a pot, but it thrives when planted individually or at the back of a border.

Planting and care

The Magnolia sieboldiil is grown in semi-shade or sunny positions, full shade is not suitable for it. Plant it in cool, rich, deep and well-drained soil. In limestone soil, dig a large planting hole and add ericaceous soil mixed with your garden soil, you will need to improve the soil with iron or organic matter from time to time to replenish the stock of minerals available to the plant. In case of drought, water abundantly/ Pruning is not necessary, however, you can open out the centre of the bush by removing any crossed branches.
