Description

The Magnolia kobus, or Kobe Magnolia, is a large bush with fast growth that offers a myriad of white cup-shaped flowers from the end of winter. It is one of the few species that tolerates limestone!

Reaching a height of 10m (32 ft 10 in), the Magnolia kobus has a pyramidal and ramified habit. The 8 to 10cm (3.1 to 3.9 in) in diameter corollas, solitary and cup-shaped, are white, sometimes slightly pink, and bloom on naked wood in March. The stamens are yellow. Afterwards, it develops deciduous, alternate, narrow, ovate, often plicate leaves, medium green with a paler underside, slightly aromatic, measuring 15 to 18cm (5.9 to 7.1 in) in length.

Originally from Japan, the Kobe Magnolia appreciates a fresh, rich, well-drained soil, even limestone, in a sunny or partially shaded position, and sheltered from prevailing winds. In summer, keep the soil moist by applying mulch.

The Magnolia kobus looks very beautiful in the middle of a flowerbed surrounded by early-flowering bulbs and perennials of varying heights, ensuring that the flowerings are well spread out.

Planting and care

The Magnolia kobus is best planted during spring in rich and moist soil. It can even tolerate wet soil, but ensure it is well-drained and has a pH of 6. It is recommended to plant it in good forest soil. The Magnolia kobus prefers light sun exposure or partial shade. Make sure it is sheltered from prevailing winds. While planting, be careful not to break the fleshy roots and ensure that the root ball is not buried too deeply. During summers, mulch and water it regularly. In the year following planting, spread anti-slug pellets around the base, as young plants are vulnerable to spring attacks. Beware of heavy frosts and hot, dry summers. Ensure to maintain good humidity by showering its foliage with a fine spray only in the evening. Pruning is not required.
