Description

The Magnolia Black Tulip has a magnificent spring bloom. A myriad of 15cm (6in) flowers, halfway between tulips and peonies, bloom on the still naked wood of the bush. Their deep purple-violet color is specific to this variety, a rare shade even among magnolias that makes you forget the long winter months with just one look.

This variety of Magnolia remains quite compact, its well-branched silhouette rarely exceeds 2.50m (8ft) from the base. It is hardy down to -20°C, but like many early-flowering shrubs, the buds can suffer from late frosts in March, so it is preferable to plant it in a sheltered location away from the wind.

Its limited growth allows you to plant Magnolia Black Tulip in gardens of all sizes and incorporate it into shrub or perennial borders. However, there is nothing stopping you from planting it individually or even in a pot on a terrace if you take care to water it regularly. In any case, make sure its visible from your windows so as not to miss a moment of its magnificent flowering with such unique colors, an antidote to late winter gloominess.

Planting and care

The Magnolia Black Tulip can be grown in partial shade or full sun, it does not thrive in full shade. It is advisable to find a location protected from cold spring winds to maintain a beautiful display of flowers. Plant it in a moist, rich, deep and well-drained soil. In limestone soil, dig a large planting hole and add ericaceous compost mixed with your garden soil, you will need to occasionally amend with iron or organic matter to replenish the plant's mineral supply. In case of drought, follow watering guidelines for young plants for 1 or 2 years after planting. Pruning is not necessary, however, you can open up the center of the bush by removing some interlocking branches.
