Quite a long recovery after planting, but now blooms almost continuously. Chosen for its red flowers which, in reality, turn out to be red and orange (see photos) and have a stunning effect.

Description

The 'Chili Clementine' standard rose forms a true ball of  miniature flowers carried by a small trunk, and the spectacle continues from late spring until the first frosts. This variety offers numerous miniature double roses grouped in small bouquets, ranging from cherry red to magenta pink, randomly and discreetly streaked with yellow. With its vibrant colour and impeccable silhouette, it's all you see!

For standard rose varieties, a specific variety, such as Chili Clementine, is grafted onto a different rose stem (Rosa laxa or R. multiflora) that is upright and single. The grafting process takes place at a height of around 50-60 cm (20-24in) from the ground. It may be necessary to protect the rootstock during the winter season in extremely cold regions.

The flowers of the 'Chili Clementine' miniature rose, gathered in terminal bouquets, come from the polyantha rose, an old hybrid derived from Rosa multiflora and Rosa chinensis. Grafted on a stem, it shows a characteristic habit and reaches a height of about 1.10 m (4ft) and a spread of 40-45 cm (16-18in) in a few years. The 4 cm (2in) flowers, double, fragrance-free, with 70 petals, bloom in large numbers in small bouquets from June to October. This variety has delicate, dark green, deciduous foliage in winter and is reasonably disease-resistant under good growing conditions. Its stems have prickles.

Created by Jürgen Evers for Tantau (Germany) in 2004.

The 'Chili Clementine' Standard Rose is well planted in a prominent position, in the centre of a flower bed, among perennials or low bushes, in a row along a pathway, near a terrace, or even in a large pot on the balcony. It can also be planted in groups of 3, arranged in a triangle, or as a solitary plant on a lawn. It pairs well with perennial geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), bellflowers (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, snapdragons, foxgloves. Standard Roses are perfect for adding volume to bush roses or ground cover clusters.

Planting and care

Roses prefer a sunny spot (at least 4 to 5 hours of sunshine daily) but away from the scorching midday sun and strong winds. Roses like loose, permeable, humus-rich soil. They prefer slightly acidic soil but will get used to any garden if it is well-worked and sufficiently rich.  To plant your rosebush in a pot, cultivate the soil to a depth of 25 cubic cm, crumbling the soil well and placing a soil improver such as blood, fish and bone at the bottom of the planting hole. After removing the plant from its pot, cover the top of the root ball with 3 cm of soil. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to help the plant take root. You should also remember to fertilise your rosebush with special rose fertiliser to stimulate flowering, especially if planted in a pot.

To make your climbing roses bloom more, bend and tie the branches during the summer. The branches can grow up to 3 feet per week. Each time you bend them, they'll produce a lateral shoot that ends in a bunch of flowers. Don't be afraid to do this, and you'll have beautiful blooms.

In areas with harsh winters, covering the grafting branch of standard roses (also known as the "trunk") with a thick winter veil is recommended to protect it.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
