Description

The Phlox paniculata 'Bambini Candy Crush', the result of 10 years of selective breeding, is part of a new series of phlox paniculata varieties with exceptionally compact growth and early and perpetual flowering, producing large bunches of beautifully coloured flowers. This recent creation has an abundance of bicoloured flowers, pink and white, with a slight fragrance. The plant is very bushy, adorned with beautiful dark green foliage that is highly resistant to diseases. It is a perennial plant particularly suited for ornamental planters and flower pots. You can place this phlox in the garden, in borders or at the front of flower beds.

The Phlox paniculata 'Bambini Candy Crush' belongs to the family of Polemoniaceae. It is a perennial plant with a woody stump that forms a small, dense clump of leafy stems that do not exceed 40 cm (16in) in all directions. The stems are stiff and sturdy, covered with dark but vibrant green leaves measuring 10 cm (4in) in length. Flowering begins in early July, before other varieties, and continues until September, provided that faded inflorescences are removed. The small flowers have a tubular corolla, pink in colour, adorned with a white spiral pattern. The throat of the flower is purple. They are grouped at the end of the stems in dense and globular panicles, slightly fragrant, with the weight barely bending the very short stems. The flowering is melliferous and nectariferous.

Phlox paniculata are perennial plants commonly found in cottage gardens, as their simplicity and legendary generosity, when planted in the sun and moist soil, are almost unmatched in perennial flower beds. In borders or at the front of flower beds, you can pair the 'Bambini Candy Crush' Phlox with the 'Bambini Desire' variety, dwarf asters, small deep pink daylilies, intense blue perennial flax, or the white flowers of groundcover roses Swany or Marie Pavie, creating a very cheerful ensemble. The Phlox paniculata 'Bambini Candy Crush' is a top-notch perennial plant for embellishing flower pots that adorn balconies and terraces.

Planting and care

Paniculate phlox are easy-to-grow plants in the sun, in deep ordinary soil that does not dry out. The 'Bambini Candy Crush' phlox prefers cool and rich soil, even clay and slightly damp but properly drained. It needs sun to flower well. A too-dry or too-hot environment makes the foliage more susceptible to powdery mildew. Planted in the sun in a climate with hot summers, it will require regular watering and mulching at the base. Pruning the faded flower heads promotes a second flowering at the end of the season. Protect young plants from slugs, which are fond of their tender shoots.
