Description
A very strong clump, capable of becoming enormous, with evergreen basal leaves, narrow like those of a grass, sometimes reaching 2 metres (7 feet) in length, with fine thorns on the edges. It has erect and highly branched flower spikes, measuring 3 to 4 metres (10 to 13 feet), carrying a multitude of globular greenish flowers turning reddish-purple at full ripeness.

Planting and care
This plant is very easy to cultivate on a slope where, with the addition of gravel to improve drainage, they live for a long time. This is the largest of the teasels, requiring a cool, moist, even clay soil to thrive. Its only flaw is being less hardy. Brief cold periods to -12° (10.4°F) are harmless. Resistant to cold in a dry and poor soil, it languishes without becoming spectacular; superb in a wet soil, it dislikes the cold. Ideal on the coast.
