Description

The Perennial Cornflower, Centaurea montana coerulea, is a perennial plant of alpine origin, with woolly stems and leaves.

The flowers, deep blue with a violet heart, bloom in May and June on stems about forty cm long. It is a classic flower of old gardens, where it brought a touch of colour to the "flowerless month" (June, between spring and summer bloomings), and was appreciated as a cut flower, fresh or dried.

It is now making a strong comeback, thanks to the astonishing shape of its flowers with elegant spreading heads.

Planting and care

Plant your Centaurea in a moist but well-drained, neutral or alkaline soil, even a poor soil, in full sun or partial shade. You will need to stake the stems before flowering and prune them once the flowers have faded. Like most alpine plants, it is sensitive to excessive winter moisture.
