Description

Agapanthus 'Lapis Lazuli' is a variety of Agapanthus known as a "border" Agapanthus, its growth is lower, but it is remarkably floriferous and early. It is the first to offer its delicate umbels, as deep blue as the gem that inspired its name. This semi-evergreen variety is moderately hardy and produces narrow dark green leaves. Perfect in large pots on the terrace, or planted in small groups near high-traffic areas, this plant should be installed in well-drained soil, in full sun, and should never lack water during its growth period.

The 'Lapis Lazuli' Agapanthus belongs to the lily family. This hybrid variety forms a narrow clump of linear, dark green foliage, about 25cm (10in) tall, which partially persists in winter. The spherical umbels of 30 to 40 flowers rise above, carried by short, strong stems, about 50cm (20in) tall. The flowering, particularly long and perpetual, takes place between June-July and September in the form of fairly dense umbels. The flower buds unfold into numerous trumpets. Each petal is marked with a dark, deep blue central line. The blue stamens are tipped with almost black anthers.

This very floriferous variety is moderately hardy (down to about -10°C (14°F)). Plant it either in a pot to overwinter and place it on a sunny terrace in summer, or in the ground, in a warm and well-drained location. It is a plant that thrives by the sea, in an English cottage, and even in a city garden, used as a focal point on a terrace, in an exotic or contemporary style. It pairs well with perennials like Phlox paniculata 'Laura', in cherry pink tones, Achillea filipendulina 'Golden Plate', in golden yellow, and colourful grasses like Schizachyrium scoparium. Cut and placed in a vase, the flowers will bring freshness and a lot of originality to the house.

Planting and care

The 'Lapis Lazuli' Agapanthus is cultivated in full sun in a warm location, in a protected and south-facing area. Place it in a rich and moist soil, but very well-drained to improve its hardiness. Water Agapanthus regularly during the growth period (twice a week), but not at all in winter. Mulch the base with a layer of dead leaves, about 20cm (8in) thick, covered with a mesh to prevent wind damage. Snow also provides excellent protection against excessive moisture and cold. If potted, bring the plant indoors to protect it from severe frost, in an unheated area. When planting, place them 10cm (4in) deep in a mixture of leaf compost and soil. Once established in the ground, avoid disturbing Agapanthus. Remove any withered leaves in autumn. Cut back the faded stems to prevent the plant from exhausting itself by producing seeds.
