First order on Promesse de fleurs on the advice of my neighbour, extremely disappointed the young plant arrived with damaged leaves despite the packaging around it.

More information

The Agapanthus plant produces dense spherical inflorescences 20 cm (7.9 in) in diameter. The flowers are azure-blue with violet streaks, and the plant grows up to 80 cm (31.5 in) tall on brown stems. The plant has beautiful ribbon-like leaves that form a clump. This variety blooms in summer, specifically in July and August, while its foliage is more or less evergreen in winter. It can withstand brief frosts from -5 to -6 °C in a very sheltered position. In cold regions, it is best to cultivate this plant in pots to protect it from the cold during winter.

Description

The Agapanthus Dokter Brouwer is a variety of Agapanthus africanus that is of medium size and appreciated for its large inflorescences in full balls of azure blue flowers, which are actually lavender blue striped with dark violet on each petal. They are held by dark brown stems that rise well above its opulent foliage. This magnificent cultivar blooms in the height of summer, and its foliage can persist in winter if not too heavily frosted. Not very hardy, it is more suited to coastal gardens. And spectacular in a large pot!

Agapanthus belongs to the lily family. The hybrid variety 'Dokter Brouwer' develops a tuft of broad linear leaves of shiny dark green colour, about 50 cm (19.7 in) in height, which remain very ornamental even in mild climates. The large spherical umbels, 20 cm wide, are carried by sturdy, dark stems, about 80 cm (31.5 in) long, towering above the foliage. The flowering is repeated between July and August. The violet flower buds unfold into numerous tiny iridescent trumpets. Each lavender blue petal is marked with a central violet line. The stamens of the same lavender blue colour are topped with almost black anthers. This variety, described as evergreen, is only moderately hardy (down to -6°C). Plant it in a pot for overwintering and place it on a sunny terrace in summer or in the ground in warm and well-drained soil that is not too dry in summer.

The Agapanthus Dokter Brouwer is a plant that thrives by the seaside or in a well-sheltered urban garden, used as a focal point on a terrace in an exotic, Mediterranean or contemporary style. Use it to create large borders or in a bed of low-growing shrubs. It goes well with medium-sized grasses and perennials such as shrub salviaskniphofias, or lavenders. It is beautiful when planted with other white, mauve or blue varieties in a minimalist setting. When cut and placed in a vase, the flowers will bring freshness and a lot of originality to the house.

We deliver agapanthus in 2/3 eye stumps. Over time, they will form more robust and more vigorous clumps.

Planting and care

Plant Agapanthus by covering them with at least 10 cm (3.9 in) of soil; this way, they will better withstand the cold. It is essential to plant them in spring and mulch them in winter. For pot cultivation, use 5 young plants for a 24 cm (9.4 in) pot and shelter your pots in winter. They prefer rich and moist but well-drained soil. Water them regularly during the growth period (twice a week). However, avoid watering them in winter as they are sensitive to excess moisture during this time of year.

The Dokter Brouwer variety will perish in temperatures below -6 °C. Therefore, cultivation in the open ground should only be reserved for areas with mild winters. Choose a rich compost and a wide pot when cultivated in a pot. It will be easy to store it in a minimally heated or unheated greenhouse.
