Description

This hardy perennial plant has fleshy roots and grows well in any fresh and deep soil, even in limestone soil. The soil must be well-drained in winter. To plant this species in heavy soil, dig a hole of 30 cm (11.8 in) in all directions, pour in pure sand, and install the stump without adding any soil. All the species and varieties of this plant have deciduous foliage. They are highly tolerant of cold weather, withstanding temperatures as low as -12°C / 10°F approximately. This makes them suitable for many regions. During very harsh winters, covering the stumps with straw or dead leaves is advisable. You can plant this species in the borders of flower beds alongside Crocosmias, Artemisias, and annual Rudbeckias or in the foreground of Ceanothuses, rock roses, Halimiums, Phlomis, etc.

This variety is derived from A. campanulatus, one of the most vigorous varieties. It produces large spikes of flowers in a bright, dark blue colour.

Planting and care

To ensure that your plants can withstand the cold, plant them by covering them with at least 10 cm (3.9 in) of good soil. It is best to plant them in spring and mulch them in winter. If you are growing them in a pot, use 5 young plants for a 24 cm (9.4 in) pot and protect your pots during winter. These plants prefer a rich, moist, and well-drained soil. Water them twice a week during the growth period, but avoid watering them afterwards. Keep in mind that they are sensitive to excessive moisture in winter.
