Description

The Delbard® 'delbias' Super Comice Pear Tree is the ideal fruit tree to start an orchard, as it is easy to grow and produces sweet and fragrant pears. It quickly bears fruit and is fairly tolerant of both climate and soil conditions. The fruit has surprising and appetizing curves, with a generously bulging shape and a bronzed yellow skin. Harvest takes place in mid-September, and the pears can be stored for a relatively short period. Keep them well stored in a cool place until the end of November.

The pear tree is native to central Asia and has been cultivated in China for 6,000 years. It was introduced to Europe around the 6th century. The oval-shaped leaves have finely toothed edges and a petiole as long as the lamina. The late white flowering occurs in April, protecting it from frost. Its flowers have 5 white petals. The flowers of the Super Comice Delbard® pear tree are not self-fertile. Williams, Beurré Hardy, Comtesse de Paris, and Fertilia Delbard® are good pollinators. Plant one of these trees nearby or ensure that there is one in the surrounding gardens.

The Super Comice Delbard® Pear Tree is perfectly hardy and adapts to all types of soil. It tolerates limestone better than other varieties and prefers cool and deep soils. In winter, add a handful of wood ash, rich in potash, to improve flowering and fruit quality.

This variety produces pears with a bronze-speckled skin on a green background that turns yellow when fully ripe. The flesh is particularly fragrant, with hints of carrot tops, medlar, and tobacco. It has a complex and surprising flavor, pleasantly accompanied by a high sugar content. It is best enjoyed raw, like a fine wine.

For transport reasons, our tallest scions may be pruned before shipping. They are suitable for all common training systems: cordons, espaliers, goblets, half-standards, and low standards, except for high standards. If you would like more information or advice on training your fruit trees, please do not hesitate to contact us.

This fruit tree is delivered with a ready-to-plant root ball. During planting, the root ball should be planted as is. The biodegradable tontine that surrounds the root ball and preserves the rootlets will decompose naturally as the plant grows. By doing this, you ensure better establishment.

Planting and care

Plant the Super Comice Delbard® pear tree in a sunny location, in acidic or neutral soil, moist but not excessively so. Ensure proper drainage in the planting hole with a thin layer of gravel. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the day of planting, place the tree with its pot in a basin of water, allowing the entire root ball to be moistened by capillary action. Add compost to the bottom of the hole. Place the tree in the hole, fill with a mixture of soil and compost. Do not bury the graft union. Firmly tamp down the soil around the base. The root ball should be completely covered. Water thoroughly.

You can add a small handful of wood ash, rich in potash, during the winter to improve fruiting.

Care

Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
