Description

Clematis 'Tibetan Mix' is an elegant climbing clematis, reaching 3m (10ft) high. It flowers late and covers old walls, trellises, fences, and tree trunks with small pale yellow flowers with purple anthers. It is not hardy and grown in pots in cold regions, or as an annual.

This climber develops deciduous leaves with 3 ovate, pale green leaflets, measuring 6cm (2in) long. They are carried by twisting stems that twine around their support using tendrils. In August and September, small single, open bell-shaped flowers with 4 recurved, pale yellow, 3cm (1in) diameter tepals, bloom on the current year's growth.

Clematis 'Tibetan Mix' thrives in light, deep, fertile, clay-siliceous soil in a sunny location with its base in the shade. It is susceptible to frost, so it is best grown in pots and brought indoors for winter in cold regions. Watch out for aphids!

Clematis 'Tibetan Mix' will add a touch of originality to a container on a terrace, planted with annuals.

Tips: Avoid excessive fertiliser applications, as it promotes foliage growth at the expense of flowers. You must grow this clematis in a pot in cold regions.

Planting and care

Clematis 'Tibetan Mix' should be planted in spring or autumn, 5cm (2in) deep, with the root ball placed flat on the soil rather than vertically as usual. The head should be in the sun and the base in the shade. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to encourage new shoots. If planted in a pot, just cover the root ball and bring it indoors for winter protection. After planting, prune the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Train them loosely to help the plant cling on its own later. Cut back all the previous year's stems to 25cm (10in) from the ground, above a pair of buds in March.
