Description

Clematis 'Love Child' is a pretty climbing Clematis, with long early flowering of lemon-yellow, trailing and slightly curved bells.

From April to August, this vigorous climber which can reach 2.50m (8ft) high, bears numerous solitary, slightly curved and trailing, lemon-yellow, single bells with pale yellow stamens, 7 cm (3in) in diameter on the previous year's branches. Its deciduous, ovate, dentate, medium green, 8cm (3in) long leaves, are carried by twisting stems that twine around their support with tendrils. After flowering, seed heads topped with a silvery grey feathery, decorative style appear.

Clematis 'Love Child' likes clay-siliceous, light, deep, moist and fertile soil, in a sunny position with its base in the shade. Planting ground cover plants is a good idea. Watch out for aphids!

Clematis 'Love Child', when combined with other varieties or paired with a climbing rose, perfectly dresses up walls, fences, bamboo pyramids or the trunk of a tree.

Tips: Avoid applying excessive fertiliser as it stimulates foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch as excessive moisture can promote clematis wilt.

Planting and care

Clematis 'Love Child' is best planted in spring or autumn, at a depth of 5cm (2in), with the root ball laid flat on the soil instead of vertically as usual and its head in the sun and foot in the shade. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to promote new shoots. After planting, cut the stems back to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Train the stems loosely to help the plant attach itself. Remove dead or damaged stems after flowering.
