Description

Clematis I am Red Robin is a recent cultivar. It produces small campanulate flowers, with closed raspberry-red bell-shaped petals and a cream interior. It blooms early and for a long time. This moderate-sized climber thrives on old walls, trellises, fences, and even in trees. Its numerous tendrils mean it can climb anywhere. It is perfect when combined with a bush, in a container, or on a fence.

Clematis is a genus in the Ranunculaceae family. It includes around 30 species of herbaceous perennials with woody roots and climbing plants, which are semi-woody, evergreen, or deciduous. They are found in both hemispheres, particularly in Europe, the Himalayas, China, Australia, North and Central America. Clematis I am Red Robin is a recent cultivar, derived from C. alpina and C. koreana (Clematis Tetragene section). It belongs to Group 1 (early-flowering clematis) of the clematis groups, which is composed of 3 divisions. It is a semi-woody, climbing perennial plant that reaches a height of 1.5 to 2m (5 to 7ft), with a spread of 1m (3ft). Groups are defined based on cultivation requirements.

This clematis bears small, narrow campanulate flowers, 5cm (2in) in diameter. They bloom on the previous year's growth from April onwards if the weather is mild. The bisexual flowers are solitary or grouped in clusters. They have no petals but have 4 tepals. The flowering is followed by decorative, silvery-grey feathery fruits. The leaves are sometimes opposite, sometimes alternate. They are glabrous and have simple, ternate, irregularly toothed edges. This clematis attaches itself to supports or host plants through petioles transformed into tendrils.

The name "clematis" comes from the Greek "klema", which means "vine stem", as its old stems have a woody and twisted appearance with cork exfoliations.

Planting and care

Ideally, plant in the sun, in fertile, humus-bearing, well-drained soil. Provide shade for the roots and base of the stem (with a flat tile, for example). Herbaceous species prefer full sun. Clematis wilts in overly moist soil. Clematis like to keep their feet cool. Work the soil to a depth of 20cm (8in), and lighten it with good compost. Position the plant and cover the root ball with 3cm (1in) of soil. Water generously and regularly during the first few weeks. Mulch all clematis in February with garden compost or well-rotted manure, avoiding direct contact with the stems. Cover the base of climbing clematis with a small mound of soil to reduce the risk of wilting while promoting the growth of vigorous shoots from the stump. After planting, cut back the stems of deciduous climbing clematis to about 30cm (12in) above a nice pair of buds. Avoid overwatering, as stagnant water can cause fungal development at the neck.

Train the stems, without squeezing them, until the plant grips on its own. Clematis also like to grow freely on neighbouring plants.

Prune Group 1 clematis after flowering, to 75cm (30in). Remove dead or damaged stems. If necessary, shorten other stems. This promotes the formation of new shoots for the following year.

Voles and grey worms can attack clematis and devour the stems. Aphids and greenhouse whiteflies are also potential parasites of clematis.
