Description

The Ageratum Cushion White is an improved variety of Mexican ageratum that forms a beautiful cushion of white flowers, both in pots and in the ground. The plant grows into a small tuft that remains compact throughout the season. It is truly covered in white pompoms from spring until late summer. This variety also offers good tolerance to both sun and rain. Ideal for animating terraces and balconies for long weeks, this annual plant nicely decorates borders and flower beds.

The dwarf Ageratum Cushion White belongs to the aster family. This variety is derived from Ageratum houstonianum, a perennial plant cultivated as an annual, native to Central America and the Caribbean. This Cushion White selection forms rounded, bushy cushions that reach a height of 25-30 cm (10-12in) and a width of 25 cm (10in). Highly branched and covered in hairs, its numerous stems rise and spread gracefully. The leaves, also hairy, are toothed and ovate in shape. Sometimes they are heart-shaped at the base, and their colour is a fairly dark bluish green. This foliage is theoretically evergreen in winter if it does not freeze. From April until early autumn, the flowers bloom continuously if faded ones are removed regularly. The inflorescences are heads assembled in bouquets. They are born cream-coloured and then open to pure white, resembling pretty feathery pompoms. The flower bouquets are so numerous that they almost entirely conceal the foliage. The plant dies with the first frost.

Mexican ageratums are often planted in urban landscaping. Their floribundance and vibrant colours allow for interesting associations with many other low-growing plants in flowerbeds: marigolds, lantanas, celosias, lobelias, marigolds, or red salvias. It is easy to create a pastel carpet by combining them with begonias and pink impatiens, or with fragrant alyssums in the foreground of the flowerbeds. The Cushion White selection allows for beautiful flowering pots with fuchsias, inside, on the terrace or balcony.

Mexican Ageratum is a plant that promotes insect pollination work. Bees, butterflies, and others.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being placed outdoors once the risk of frost has been definitively avoided.

Planting and care

Plant the Ageratum in well-drained soil, rich in compost, in a sunny location. It is sensitive to drought, so the base of the plant should never be dry. Remove faded flowers to promote the production of new flowers. The plant does not like limestone. Apply a fertilizer low in nitrogen, such as one specifically for geraniums.
