My review applies to the 6 different varieties of plug plants, which arrived perfectly fresh. I planted them in buckets, left them in a greenhouse over winter, and they have been in flower since then. Some are bigger than others, but all have a 100% success rate. I rarely comment, but I had read a lot of remarks about the success rate, so to all conscientious gardeners, rest assured!

Description

The Viola cornuta Sorbet XP 'White', also known as the hybrid horned violet, produces vigorous early-flowering plants, forming small clumps covered with an abundance of pure white flowers. This biennial plant is easy to grow, tolerates heat and cold, and blooms for a long period. It will bring a vibrant and elegant touch to borders, balconies, or terraces. It should be grown in humus-rich and moist soil, in full sun or partial shade.

Belonging to the Violeceae family, the horned violet, which grows wild in the Pyrenees, is a low perennial plant that has given rise to numerous hybrids and cultivars. Often crossed with Viola tricolor (wild pansy), their most famous descendants are garden pansies. The 'Sorbet XP White' variety is a herbaceous groundcover plant that reaches a height of 15 to 20 cm (7.9 in) when in bloom. Its dark green, oval, crenated and evergreen leaves form a spreading clump with a sprawling habit. This plant is covered with immaculate white flowers with a tiny yellow center, from spring to autumn. Its compound flowers, with 5 petals, resemble those of small pansies, but their petals are arranged differently. The two upper petals are erect, and the other three are inclined downwards. The plant spreads quite rapidly thanks to its root system and also self-seeds easily in the garden, although not always true to type.

Horned violets are intended for low beds and borders but also pots and window boxes, where they can be used to create beautiful colour combinations on their own, or with other plants that flower in spring and summer (forget-me-nots, dwarf daffodils, daisies, primroses, tulips, summer and autumn asters, etc.). The flowers of horned violets are edible, so do not hesitate to decorate your plates with one or two flowers, or even sprinkle some on your salads to give them a splash of colour.

Note: Please be aware that our young plant plugs are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, into containers, flowerpots, or directly into flowerbeds.

Planting and care

Horned violets thrive in a light, humus-rich soil, moist but well-drained as they dislike excessive moisture in winter. In heavy soil, add a little sand to improve the drainage.

Plant in a sunny, but not over-hot location, or in light shade.

Fast-growing and free-flowering, they are nutrient-demanding plants. Feed them with a liquid feed once or twice a week during the growth period. Water regularly but not excessively. Deadhead to encourage flowering.
