Gorgeous bright orange-red pansy, with its black streaks. The flowers are quite large, so it's important to give them enough space between plants for their well-being, especially in containers and flower beds. They withstand winter frosts very well.

Description

Viola hybrida 'Matrix Solar Flare' hybrid pansies bear an abundance of vibrant flowers in shades of orange, speckled with black. They bloom for a long period. The plants are compact, early-flowering, disease-resistant, cold-resistant, and heat-resistant. This variety regrows in spring and does not bolt with the first heat, ensuring a long flowering period. It is easy to grow in humus-bearing moist soil, in a sunny or semi-shaded position.

Garden pansies, sometimes called Swiss giant pansies, are hybrids grouped in the Viola x wittrockiana group. They belong to the Violaceae family and are most often grown as annuals or biennials, although they are theoretically perennial but short-lived. The 'Matrix Solar Flare' variety produces ramified plants that quickly form compact clumps, with a slightly spreading habit, 20cm (8in) tall and 20 to 30cm (8 to 12in) wide. They flower from late winter to the end of spring, or from the end of spring to the end of summer. 'Matrix Solar Flare' pansies bear fully open medium-sized flowers, 4 to 5cm (2in) in diameter. Their colours range from pale orange to deep orange, copper, and orangish-yellow, depending on the plants. They all have 3 black spots at the base of the petals, around a tiny bright yellow and white centre. The medium green leaves are elliptical and broadly crenate.

Pansies are wonderful in the garden, but they also work beautifully in a pot on a windowsill to be enjoyed up close. They look perfect alongside primroses, wallflowers, grape hyacinths, and daisies. They even go well with grasses like Japanese sedge for a contemporary effect. Combine them with heucheras and tulips. The blue-green of glaucous fescues also enhances their beauty.

Pansy petals are edible, and their colours will add a unique touch to salads and pastries. For this use, consider growing them just like you would grow your vegetables, in the most natural way possible.

Planting and care

Pansies thrive in humus-rich, neutral to acidic, moist and fertile soil. A quality horticultural compost will be very suitable. They appreciate a sunny or semi-shaded exposure. They are fast-growing and produce an abundance of blooms, making them hungry plants. They need to be fed with a liquid plant food for containers once or twice a week during the growth period. Water regularly but without excess. Regularly remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms.
