They arrived in mini plugs, strong and well packaged. I planted them the same day, they seem to be doing well for now.

Description

The Double Primrose 'Belarina Lively Lilac' invites contemplation, both because of the unprecedented colour of its very double flowers, a randomly striped and bordered lilac violet with white, and for their fragrance, so pleasant at the end of winter. They appear from January to April, their fascinating flowering nestled in a tangle of beautifully embossed leaves. Once widely planted in English cottages, double primroses had almost disappeared. New varietal creations, always more exciting, are bringing these very romantic biennials back into the spotlight for our greatest pleasure!

The Primula vulgaris (acaulis) 'Belarina Lively Lilac' is a herbaceous biennial plant from the primrose family, derived from the stemless primrose found in our meadows and woodlands. It is part of a series of recent creations that are distinguished by their early flowering, which takes place from December-January to March-April, by the doubling of their corollas, and by their very vibrant colours. These are floriferous plants that form lovely dense foliage clumps in just a few months, reaching heights of 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in) and widths of 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12in). They develop persistent rosettes of embossed and veined leaves, in a beautiful bright green. 'Belarina Lively Lilac' produces 3 cm (1in) diameter flowers. They are very double, resembling small roses, variegated with mauve violet and white, gathered in perfect bouquets at the heart of luxuriant foliage. They are beautiful but also well-scented.

Belarina primroses are versatile, reliable, and truly easy to cultivate. They deserve a place in every garden and on every balcony. Colourful, floriferous, and fragrant, they herald and precede the return of spring. Perfect in pots, planters, and borders, they even thrive in shade and fertile, moist soil alongside botanical tulips, pansies, horned violets, and forget-me-nots. Under deciduous cover, in rockeries and meadows, they mingle with snowdrops and violets. The leaves and flowers are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked.

Properties:

They are the same as those of the common primrose and the cowslip: the flowers are soothing and calming, used in expectorant preparations. The leaves help prevent bruising, and the entire plant (especially the root) has analgesic, anti-spasmodic, diuretic, and expectorant properties.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in pots, planters, or directly in borders.

Planting and care

The plug plants of double primroses 'Belarina Lively Lilac' are planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in a finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them if possible upon receipt, in September-October. If the intended location is not yet ready or if the conditions are unfavorable for planting, you can let them grow in buckets for 4 to 6 weeks.

In pots and containers, use a good flowering plant compost (geranium compost) enriched with clay and slow-release fertilizer, lightweight and well-draining. The top of the plug should be level with the compost. Water generously at planting and during the following weeks, as the plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be cautious of excess water! Ensure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered spot. Do not water during freezing periods.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, the perennial primroses 'Belarina' are hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, in late February/early March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertilizer for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week with the watering water. Remove faded flowers to promote new blooms. Once flowering is over, potted plants can be replanted in the garden in semi-shade.
