Description
Planted en masse, this carnation, also known as Dianthus Russian Skies, forms pretty fluffy clumps, which are quite blurry, covered in small flowers infused with pink and amethyst, with a striking Impressionist effect. Very easy to grow, it blooms the summer following sowing. This hardy perennial plant tolerates drought and blooms all summer on beautiful blue-green evergreen foliage. It fits everywhere in empty spaces, in the foreground of flowerbeds or in borders. This little unusual plant, with its striking charm, tolerates drought and limestone, but requires full sun to thrive.
Dianthus Russian Skies is a recent creation that has not yet been formally identified. This small perennial plant from the carnation family has rapid growth and unyielding hardiness. On its own, this carnation can cover half a square meter. It forms small dense clumps of 35 cm (14in) in all directions, composed of stems covered in tiny elongated leaves. The opposite, linear and narrow leaves, bluish green in colour, are evergreen. Flowering begins in June-July, from the first summer following sowing, and can continue late into autumn. The flowers, with 5 petals, are adorned with a very rich and unusual colour, pink tinged with amethyst, often veined with purple, more or less variable.
The remarkably dense flowering of this carnation makes it an ideal plant for rockeries or patios, but also an excellent groundcover to carpet the base of roses and other flowering or foliage shrubs, until the first frost. Its mauve pink colour perfectly matches, from July to September, that of Phlox 'Amethyst', and goes well with Sedum 'Karfunkelstein'. Like the majority of carnations, it tolerates drought well. In dry soil, it pairs well with Cerastostigma plumbaginoides and accompanies the flowering of Aster ericoides, turbinellus, or that of shrubby salvias, Salvia x jamensis, Salvia microphylla ...

Planting and care
Sow from April to June or in September-October.
Sow Dianthus seeds directly in place or indoors.
Indoors: use a special sterile seed compost. Sow the seeds on top, lightly cover with light soil, compost, or vermiculite. Keep in the light, as this promotes germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 20 to 30 days.
When they are sufficiently developed, transplant the young plants into 7.5 cm (3in) diameter pots. Move the young plants outside after the frosts, maintaining a distance of 30 cm (12in) between each plant.
You can sow directly outside in spring, when there is no more frost, on well-prepared soil. Lightly cover the seeds and keep moist. Thin out the sowing, maintaining a spacing of 15 cm (6in). Then transplant the plants at a distance of 30 cm (12in).
Cultivation: plant these carnations in any ordinary soil, even poor and dry, in the sun.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).

In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
