Description

Dorotheanthus bellidiformis, or ice plant, is an annual succulent native to South Africa with a cushion-like habit dotted with multicoloured daisies. Florists call it 'Magic Carpet' because of its extraordinary ground cover qualities.

Dorotheanthus bellidiformis belongs to the Aizoaceae family. It can be found on coastal facades along beaches or in rocky areas. Florists commonly refer to it as magic carpet due to its spreading cushion-like habit, which tends to stay close to the ground. With a maximum height of 20cm (8in), it can cover twice its width.

The name bellidiformis can be broken down to describe the plant: 'belli' refers to the similarity in shape with Bellis or daisy, and 'diformis' emphasises the unattractive appearance of this flower.

Isn't it unfair? The ice plant does indeed resemble a daisy, but its outer florets are longer, thinner, and slightly upright. The centre is darker and dotted with powdery anthers at maturity. The flowers vary in colour from yellow, white, lilac, pink, red, orange, to bicoloured. With their 5cm (2 in) diameter and 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) height, they give the impression of a swarm of flowers pinned to the ground. The medium green leaves are spatulate and alternate. Their ability to store water makes them glossy and fleshy.

As a coastal plant, the ice plant appreciates poor, sandy, well-drained soil and full sun. The more light it receives, the more abundant its flowers (from June to October). It thrives in rock gardens and difficult terrains, as well as in pots or containers. Appreciate it for its excellent ground cover qualities. The rich colour palette of its flowers is ideal for creating floral arrangements. However, it is also possible to combine them with sedum, which generally have the same water, soil, and exposure requirements.

Planting and care

It is an easy and generous plant. Sow thinly under glass in a sandy mixture from March to May or sow directly in open ground from April to June. It requires a minimum temperature of 16°C (60.8 °F) and takes 20 days to germinate. The seeds should be just below the surface and the plants should be spaced at least 5cm (2 in) apart.
