Description
The Tulipa viridiflora 'Yellow Spring Green' blooms in late spring, but definitely worth the wait. Its elegant flowers, resembling pointed lilies, are similar to those of its ancestor 'Spring Green', but in yellow. They are flecked with apple green at the center of the petals, but predominantly colored in vibrant yellow and touched with white-cream streaks. Original and long-lasting both in the garden and in a vase, they are all different and easy to combine with red, pink, yellow, orange, and white tones, in the garden and in bouquets.
The Tulipa Viridiflora 'Yellow Spring Green' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 8, which mainly features late-season flowering and striped or flecked green flowers. The 'Yellow Spring Green' variety will reach a height of 45 cm (18in) when in bloom. Perched on sturdy stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the globular cup-shaped flowers, 10 cm (4in) wide, have 6 very slender petals at their tips. Variegated with green in the center and flecked with white-cream on a yellow background, the combination of petals creates an elegant and fresh look. The flower opens into a wide star with a strong yellow color when fully ripened. The flowering takes place in May, at the end of the tulip season. An additional advantage of the Tulipa Viridiflora is that its flowers remain beautiful for at least three weeks. It is an excellent cut flower.
The Tulipa viridiflora 'Yellow Spring Green' is very hardy, ideal for planting in groups in flower beds to add undeniable charm to the garden. It can accompany both biennials and perennials, or be planted in small touches in rockeries. You can pair it with daisies, forget-me-nots, fleabanes, or pink pansies. The flowers are perfect for creating bouquets full of personality, for example with fern leaves and grass spikes, as they have excellent vase life.
In their natural state, tulips can be found from Western Europe to China and Japan, passing through Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution area also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. There are various endangered wild species in Europe.

Planting and care
Place the tulipa viridiflora 'Yellow Spring Green' preferably in a sunny spot from October to December for a beautiful spring flowering. You can also place it in a partially shaded location. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in a light, fertile, and well-drained soil, loosened to a depth of 15 cm (6in) (bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs 10 cm (4in) apart, making sure they do not touch each other to create a mass effect. The care required is very easy. Simply water regularly, especially during dry winters, and cut the flower stems after flowering. Allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
