Description

This mix of Viridiflora Tulips will delight gardeners who appreciate whimsy. It brings together different varieties of different colours but that have in common large, slightly twisted corollas, crossed by green flames. These unusual flowers can last up to three weeks, and they create a superb mass effect at the end of the tulip season. For late tulips, they persist quite well in the garden. They are also excellent cut flowers.

The Viridiflora Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 8, which is currently the least significant group, closely related to that of late single tulips. The main characteristics of viridiflora are a late flowering season and flowers striped or flamed with green. The plant will reach a height of 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) when in bloom, depending on the variety. Perched on sturdy stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the narrow cup-shaped flowers, 6 cm (2in) wide, resemble those of water-lily-flowered Tulips. But their six "petals" (more precisely tepals) are more irregular and randomly variegated with green in the centre. Flowering takes place at the end of May or in June, at the end of the tulip season. Another advantage of the Viridiflora Tulip is that its flowers remain beautiful for a long time, at least three good weeks. It is an excellent cut flower.

The mixed Viridiflora Tulip can be accompanied by both biennials and perennials or planted in small groups in the rockery. You can associate it with pink daisies or pansies. It is a charming addition to your flower beds.

Note: Each batch is unique and the proportion of colurs may vary significantly from one batch to another.

Planting and care

Plant the viridiflora tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add manure or poorly decomposed compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The tulip will thrive in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant it in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Once flowering is over, it is advisable to remove the fruit to avoid depleting the plant.
