Description

Tulipa 'Green Dance' is a new variety of lily-flowered tulip with curled ivory-white petals, streaked with green. It will be sensational in a vase or in flower beds, whether used alone or paired with other varieties in violet, pink, or white. Its unique flowers are perched on a slender, but very sturdy, stem that reaches a height of about 40cm (16in). It blooms quite late, in April-May depending on the climate.

'Green Dance' belongs to the Liliaceae family. It is a recent cultivar obtained in 2017 in the Netherlands, alongside the 'Red Dance' and 'Purple Dance' varieties. It is classified in division 6 of horticultural tulips. The main characteristics of this category are as follows: they bear single flowers and bloom in the second half of spring, the cups are narrow, and the pointed petals open in a star shape. Each flower of 'Green Dance' blooms in pale-yellow streaked with green, becoming ivory-white over time. This variety will reach a height of 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in) when in bloom. Flowering takes place at the end of April or beginning of May. The foliage is thinner than that of other tulips. Each solitary flower is supported by a thin stem resistant to the elements.

Lily-flowered tulips, created in the early 20th century, were very successful with our grandmothers, then fell somewhat into oblivion. They are now being rediscovered, with a new, bold look that is well-suited to our contemporary settings. 'Green Dance' will look wonderful in large flower beds. It pairs well with all the colours of the rainbow, but its green and cream-white hues are enhanced by pink, violet, and white flowers. It can be planted in borders, flower beds, pots, and containers. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials. The flowers are ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day. Many varieties of lily-flowered tulips are grown for forcing and produce cut flowers for a large part of the year.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Green Dance' tulips from September to December for spring flowering. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Plant the bulbs in light, fertile, and well-drained soil. Plant the bulbs 15cm (6in) deep. Space the bulbs 15cm (6in) apart (without touching each other) to create a mass effect that will provide a more decorative appearance. The aftercare is easy. Simply water regularly, especially during dry winters, and cut the flower stems after flowering. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them. Provide a balanced liquid fertiliser every week during the first month.
