Tulipa Budlight - Lily flowering Tulip

Tulipa Budlight Tulip is a new variety of lily-flowered tulip with creamy white petals flamed with lemon-yellow, a delightful colour. Like all lily-flowered varieties, it is synonymous with elegance and perfection. For a late tulip, it persists quite well in the garden and it makes an excellent cut flower. We need to rediscover these beautiful lily-flowered tulips, which have become rare in our gardens.

The 'Budlight' lily-flowered tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. It is classified in division 6 of horticultural tulips, which has 15 divisions. Their main characteristics are that they bear single flowers, bloom in the second half of spring, and have narrow cup-shaped flowers with pointed and recurved tepals when opening and at night, which open into star shapes when fully mature. During the day, these flowers become spider-like and widely open. They were created in the early 20th century. This variety will reach a height of 45 cm (18in) when in bloom and flower at the end of April. The colour of this tulip is enhanced by its thick texture. The foliage is thinner than other tulips. Each solitary flower is supported by a stem that appears fragile but is resistant to bad weather.

Tulipa 'Budlight' lily-flowered tulip finds a place in large flower beds. Its beautiful bright colours allow for associations with tulips in white or orange tones, creating a beautiful harmony. This also maximizes the duration of flowering in the garden. Combine it with Corsican hellebores and euphorbias for stunning scenes. It can also be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, as well as in pots and containers. This tulip will decorate balconies and terraces well. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials and is ideal for creating splendid bouquets. Use very little water in the vase, just a small amount is enough! If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day. Many varieties of lily-flowered tulips are grown for forcing to produce cut flowers for a large part of the year.

 About botanical species: Tulip species are found in most parts of the Old World, from Western Europe to China and Japan, through eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and central Asia. Their distribution range also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is located in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains, as well as the steppes of Kazakhstan. 

There are various wild species, many of which are endangered. These are either large tulips from cultivated fields, the most well-known being the Agen tulip (Tulipa agenensis), or small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, they are called 'botanical tulips', and one of the most common is the wild tulip (Tulipa sylvestris), which often used to grow sheltered by vineyards and whose subspecies australis is known as the southern tulip.
