The quintessential red tulip, absolutely beautiful. A gorgeous deep red. The tulip to have in your garden, I think I'll order some more for a pop of colour in the flower bed. Description

The Valery Gergiev fringed Tulip has cherry red flowers in April-May. The fringed edge of the petals is also red. Perfect in spring beds or bouquets, their elegance and vase life make them perfect for enthusiasts.

Valery Gergiev Fringed Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is to have finely fringed petal tips. This tulip will reach 45 cm (18in) high when in bloom from April, a little later many other tulips. The flowers are single, with a slightly open cup shape, and measure up to 8 cm (3in). The fringed edges of this tulip are also red. The flowers last a long time and allow the tulip season to be extended until May.

After flowering, the withered foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarelles, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts or Cyparissia Spurge, at the forefront of your beds, as their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves. Red is still uncommon in the garden, so take advantage of the wide range of tulips in this colour. Red tulips will be elegantly enhanced by dark green foliage, such as a yew or box hedge. Also consider dark foliage plants like Heuchera Obsidian.

In the world of flowers, nothing compares to fringed tulips to spice up your spring garden with something unique. Valery Gergiev is ideal in borders and will create beautiful spots in perennial beds, alongside biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose forget-me-nots or wallflowers for this. By choosing fringed tulips, you will bring a unique touch to your bouquets.

Tulip species are found in most of the Old World, from Western Europe to China and Japan, through Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution range also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

There are various wild species, many of which are endangered. These are either large tulips from cultivated fields, the most well-known being the Agen tulip (Tulipa agenensis), or small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, these are called "botanical tulips," and one of the most common is the wild tulip (Tulipa sylvestris), which often used to grow sheltered by vineyards and whose subspecies australis is known as the southern tulip.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, between September and December, 15 cm (6in) deep (cover the bulbs with twice their height of soil), and 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Valery Gergiev will grow well in moist to dry soil, in a sunny or partially shaded location.
