Description

Tulipa Huis Ten Bosch fringed tulip has pastel pink mixed with white flowers in April-May. The edges of the petals are fringed in pink and white as well. Perfect in spring borders or for cut flowers, their elegance and vase life are making them increasingly popular.

Tulipa Huis Ten Bosch fringed tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'fringed' group, whose main characteristic is to have finely dentate petal tips. This tulip will reach a height of 45 cm (18in) when in bloom from April, a little later than other tulips. The flowers are simple, with a slightly open cup shape. The fringed edges of this tulip are also pink and white. The flowers last a long time and allow the tulip season to be extended until May.

After flowering, their faded foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarelles, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts or Cyparissia Spurge in the foreground of your borders, their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and elegantly hide their yellowed leaves.

In the world of flowers, there is nothing to compare to fringed tulips to spice up your garden in spring with something unique. Ideal as an edging plant, the Huis Ten Bosch Dentate Tulip will also create beautiful groups in perennial borders, alongside biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose forget-me-nots or wallflowers for this purpose. By choosing fringed tulips, you will add a unique touch to your bouquets.

Tulip species are found in most of the Old World, from Western Europe to China and Japan, passing through Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution area also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is in the Pamir and Hindukush Mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

There are various wild species, many of which are endangered. These are either large tulips from cultivated fields, the most well-known being the Agen Tulip (Tulipa agenensis), or small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, these are called "botanical tulips," and one of the most common is the wild tulip (Tulipa sylvestris), which often used to grow sheltered by vineyards and whose subspecies australis is known as the southern tulip.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in the autumn, between September and December, 15 cm (6in) deep (cover the bulbs with twice their height of soil) and 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Huis Ten Bosch will thrive in moist to dry soil, in a sunny or partially shaded location.
