The young plant was in good condition, but the roots had twisted and turned too much in the pot. A colony of ants had also settled there...

Description

Spiraea Cinerea 'Graciosa' is a bushy shrub resulting from the crossing between Spiraea cana and S. hypericifolia. This frequently grown bush has long drooping stems. The branches slightly curve at the ends.

From April to May, numerous small white flowers with yellow centres gathered in a corymb shape (small flattened cluster) cover the branches. This spirea, also called Spiraea Cinerea 'Grefsheim', has deciduous foliage that adds elegance to the whole. The lanceolate and finely dentate leaves, 2 cm to 3 cm (0.8 in to 1.2 in) long, are light green and turn yellow in autumn. They are small and narrow. The overall height reaches up to 1.2 m (3.9 ft) at maturity.

Spiraea has excellent hardiness. It generally lends itself well to group plantings such as in flower beds, rockeries, or in pots. It can also be grown individually. It has a special charm by the seaside.

Planting and care

Plant Spiraea Cinerea 'Graciosa' in a sunny location in a rich, moist but well-drained soil. Despite its good hardiness, the young shoots can be damaged by late frosts. Water sparingly. As for pruning, cut back the spent branches to the level of the well-placed large buds or above the young shoots emerging from the base. In a mature plant, cut back to the base, between a fifth and a quarter of the stems older than three years, to allow for the formation of new stems. Ensure good air circulation in the centre of the bush. Carry out this pruning every two to three years after flowering (November-December).
