Beautiful Rhododendron, arrived in perfect condition with numerous buds, in very careful packaging (March 2021). Thank you to Promesses de fleurs for its valuable advice during planting, I greatly appreciated the time taken by the person contacted. 1 month later, my rhododendron is already very beautiful and many flowers are opening every day (attached photos). Partial shade exposure, potted in an inner city courtyard. Thank you to Promesses de Fleurs, I am delighted.

This rhododendron produces bouquets in spring that can have up to 15 large frilled flowers, coloured coral pink on a creamy yellow background, with a red-tinted centre. The bush, of modest size, is particularly suitable for container cultivation. Its evergreen foliage is decorative even in winter and the plant withstands cold weather very well. Cultivate it in acidic soil that you always keep slightly moist, in partial shade or even in the morning sun.

Description

Rhododendron 'Naselle' doesn't go unnoticed in the heart of spring, covered with clusters of large frizzy flowers, superbly bicoloured, combining coral pink and tender yellow. This hybrid variety forms a bush of modest size but very floriferous, with beautiful evergreen foliage, perfect for decorating a terrace or a heather bed, always in partial shade. It is a very hardy specimen, with a mid-early flowering period. 'Rhodos', as spectacular as they are exclusive, only thrive in acidic, rich, fresh but well-drained soil and under humid climates.

Rhododendrons are plants from the ericaceae family, just like heathers, preferring mostly soils devoid of limestone, with an acidic tendency, and humid climates. The Naselle cultivar forms a bush with a generally rounded habit, reaching approximately 1.20m (4ft) in height and 1m (3ft) in width at the age of 10 years, under good cultivation conditions, in open ground. Its growth is rather slow. Its large leaves are elliptical in shape, dark green and glossy on the upper side, showing a lighter and fuzzy underside. They persist in winter. Around mid-May, for about 3 weeks, large clusters or rounded corymbs with up to 15 flower buds bloom at the end of the branches. They open into large funnel-shaped flowers, 10 to 11cm (4in) in diameter, with undulated petals at the edges. The centre of the flower, almost red in colour, is equipped with long golden stamens. The petals are a gradient from bright coral pink to maize yellow and then cream yellow, from the periphery to the centre.

The Rhododendron 'Naselle' is a floriferous and hardy plant, tolerating temperatures down to -15°C (5°F) or even -20°C (1°F). Even though they prefer a partially shaded exposure, hybrid Rhododendrons can withstand the morning sun as long as it's not scorching and their roots remain moist. "Naselle", with its brilliant and generous flowering, will easily dress up a partially shaded space in the garden, alongside ferns, hostas, Pieris, heathers, Japanese Azaleas, or other rhododendrons from the same group to create superb patchworks of textures and colours in spring. Growing in pots is possible, but it requires slightly more frequent watering with non-limestone water and regular applications of specific fertilizers for ericaceous plants.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Naselle' Rhododendron in a semi-shaded or even shady position, protected from cold and drying winds, in a moist, humus-rich, and light soil, with an acidic or neutral tendency. Like all plants in the heather family, it does not tolerate chalky soils or heavy soils saturated with water in winter. If the soil remains moist in summer, this rhododendron can also tolerate morning sun exposure. Avoid planting at its base, as its shallow roots do not tolerate competition from other plants, especially for water resources.

Dig a hole three times larger than the pot volume. Soak the root ball in non-chalky water and plant the bush at the collar level, in a mixture consisting of leaf compost, gravel or pumice, and loam. Water generously and keep the soil moist in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a shallow root system. As a result, they are sensitive to long periods of drought. That's why humus-rich soil and abundant watering during dry periods are recommended. In addition, this root system is not very strong, so it is essential to lighten heavy soils with draining materials (gravel, pumice, clay balls) at planting. Apply a mulch of shredded pine bark at the base of the bush every spring to keep the soil cool while maintaining an acidic pH.

Maintenance consists of removing faded flowers in summer and pruning any dead branches. Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by weevils that eat the edges of leaves and rootlets, as well as the famous "rhododendron beetle," which does not often cause severe damage. Effective biological solutions exist today against weevils. Yellowing of leaves (chlorosis) in Rhododendron indicates poor assimilation of iron from the soil and leads to premature plant death. While limestone is often the cause, poorly drained soil or deeply planted root balls can also explain the phenomenon.

"Rhodos" thrive in cooler climates, planted in limestone-free soil and in a humid environment. Their cultivation in hotter and drier climates is often doomed to failure in the long run, despite all the efforts made to acclimatize them.
