The young plant is very small but looks sturdy and well-filled.

Description

Hydrangea Semiola is the result of cross-breeding between Hydrangea petiolaris and H. seemani.

Its evergreen foliage is dark green. The young shoots are coppery red. The flowers are white in spring. It is vigorous with average growth. It can reach from 3 to 6m (10 to 20ft) in height. It clings to trellises against a wall.

This recent acquisition is ideal with its evergreen and decorative foliage, perfect for brightening up the garden. However, it is delicate to grow, and does not tolerate drought. It is hardy to -10°C (14°F). To be reserved for experienced gardeners, in a protected situation.

Planting and care

Plant it in a north or east exposure, in deeply worked, well-drained soil. A good base fertiliser will promote the recovery of your plant and nourish it without risk of burning. If your soil is dry, mix our water retainer, stockosorb, into the soil when filling in the planting hole and plan for a watering basin on the surface. Remove the faded flowers. After many years, pruning may be required to thin out the branches and define its space. This should be done at the end of winter.
