Description

Ceanothus arboreus 'Trewithen Blue' is a large bush with intense blue flowering. This variety is interesting for its large size and upright habit that allows for beautiful isolated uses. Its flowers are nectar-producing. The decorative flowering lasts a long time. Numerous flowers appear between April and June in a deep blue colour. They are grouped in paniculate clusters that are 6 cm to 8 cm (2.4 in to 3.1 in) long.

Ceanothus foliage is evergreen and green in colour. The leaves are alternate, elliptical, and finely dentate. Its average lifespan is 15 to 20 years and its ideal climate is rather maritime. It tolerates sea spray well.

Native to California, the eastern United States, and Mexico, it has good hardiness that goes down to -10° C (14° F), provided it is planted in well-drained soil. It requires a lot of space in the garden. It can be placed in isolation, in a bed, as a free hedge, as well as by the seaside.

Planting and care

Place Ceanothus in a sunny or partially shaded position. Plant in ordinary soil that should be moist but well-drained. Beware of cold drafts that the bush does not like. It can be placed close to a wall. Plant it all year round, except during frost, by mixing your garden soil with compost. Water generously once or twice a week to promote establishment. It is a very easy plant to grow. Moisture in the soil during the winter period is harmful to the plant. That is why, in affected soils, it is better to plant Ceanothus on a mound.
