Description
Abutilon megapotanicum ‘Red Trumpet’ is a decidedly exotic shrub for adorning terraces, patios and balconies. Its original bright red bell-shaped flowers, reminiscent of little lanterns, bring a beautiful touch of colour from summer until autumn. Its slightly trailing habit and finely cut foliage give it an elegant silhouette. In cold climates, it should be overwintered in a conservatory or cold greenhouse, sheltered from frost. This pretty variety has been awarded by the R.H.S.
Abutilon 'Red Trumpet' or 'Oostredtrump' belongs to the Malvaceae family. It comes from the species Abutilon megapotamicum, native to South America (Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina). This variety forms a slender bush reaching about 1.50 m in height (maximum 2 m), with a similar spread or slightly wider, depending on climate and growing conditions. Its growth is slower in cool climates or in pots. The foliage is semi-evergreen to evergreen, depending on the winters. It consists of oval or slightly heart-shaped, bright green leaves, finely toothed on the edge, measuring 5 cm long. Flowering begins in July and continues until the first frosts in the very ornamental form of a profusion of small pendant flowers on a petiole. Each flower consists of a swollen calyx and 5 red petals, veined with dark red. The corolla measures 4 to 5 cm in diameter. The trunk of this Abutilon withstands down to –5/-7 °C, if planted in a very sheltered position, against a south-facing wall, for example.
Abutilon ‘Red Trumpet’ naturally finds a place on a sunny terrace, in a large pot or in the heart of a border in mild climates. It can be associated with shrubby fuchsias and small non-running bamboos, Fargesia. To create a tropical atmosphere, it can be accompanied by lush foliage, notably cannas and common castor oil plants.

Planting and care
Plant Abutilon megapotamicum 'Red Trumpet' in spring (or in autumn in very mild climates), in a sheltered, very sunny location, in well-drained soil that remains moist, light, and fertile. This abutilon is not a plant for dry soil. Dig a generous planting hole, adding some compost and sand to your garden soil if needed to improve its quality. Water generously after planting and during summer in periods of high heat. Abutilon is highly susceptible to slugs and snails, lepidoptera, aphids, and particularly powdery mildew.
Growing in pots:
Choose a large pot with drainage holes, with a capacity of 30 to 50 litres. Ensure good drainage by placing a layer of gravel, broken terracotta pots, or clay pebbles at the bottom. Fill with a mix of half garden soil, a quarter leaf mould, and a quarter coarse sand. The substrate should be rich in nutrients and kept moist throughout the growing season. Abutilon requires regular watering during the hottest months and a regular application of flowering plant fertiliser from May to September. In winter, reduce watering and stop fertilising. Move the plant to a bright, cool (or unheated) location, but frost-free.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
