Description
The Silene uniflora 'Druett's Variegated' is a perennial appreciated for its spreading growth, its delicately variegated evergreen foliage, and its white flowering. Hardy and robust, the Sea Campion is a good plant for rockeries, slopes, and borders or to plant above walls. As long as it is exposed to full sun, this plant thrives in any well-drained, moist to dry soil. Even outside of flowering, its bright foliage remains visually appealing all year round.
The Silene uniflora or Silene maritima, also known as Sea Campion or Maritime Catchfly, belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family, like Carnations, Gypsophila, or Sandworts. This perennial plant is found in coastal areas of western France. The 'Druett's Variegated' variety forms a compact cushion, reaching about 10 to 15 cm in height. Its mat-forming rootstock has the ability to spread on the ground over an area of at least 30 cm in diameter. The flowering is particularly abundant, from June to late August. During this period, the plant is adorned with a profusion of beautiful flowers, 1.5 to 2.5 cm in diameter, composed of 5 notched pure white petals, above a swollen green-brown calyx, arranged in a sparse cyme, sometimes solitary. Its dense and evergreen foliage in winter is carried by thin and brittle stems. The lanceolate and leathery leaves are of a superb green-blue color, widely bordered with cream white.
The Druett's Variegated Sea Campion is an easy and generous perennial plant that roots effortlessly in the soil. Low-maintenance, it is an ideal choice in the garden to bring a decorative effect to walls, borders of flower beds and terraces, rockeries, but also to fill jars and half-barrels. This rockery plant par excellence is renowned for its good drought resistance once well-established. For maximum visual impact, plant the variegated Sea Campion in mass. It also shines when combined with other rockery-friendly perennials such as iberis, Basket of Gold (Alyssum saxatile), aubrietas, moss phlox (Phlox subulata), Germander (Teucrium chamaedrys), or simply in the company of colorful sedums.

Planting and care
Plant Silene maritima 'Druett's Variegated' in ordinary, permeable and humus-bearing, rocky or limestone, moist to dry soil. In heavy soil, adding compost or potting soil is beneficial. A gravel-rich soil yields good results. This plant prefers a very sunny exposure. Lightly trim the clump after flowering to help it fill out again.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
