Description

Salvia jamensis Melen is a compact shrubby perennial with early flowering, constantly renewed from May to November. Its numerous tubular flowers are light yellow, with an orange upper lip, contrasting with a dark brown calyx and measure 2 cm (1in) long. The flowers are carried by thin upright reddish-brown stems.

The foliage of the Salvia jamensis is semi-evergreen and dark green and the 3 cm (1in) long leaves are thin and aromatic. When fully mature, the Salvia Melen reaches a height of 60 cm (24in).

This plant can tolerate temperatures as low as -10°C (14°F). It can be grown in borders alongside grasses, as a low hedge, in rock gardens, or in pots on a balcony or terrace. You can even place the sage as a standalone plant.

Planting and care

Plant Salvia jamensis Melen in a sunny location. It tolerates morning shade. Plant in ordinary soil as long as it is well-drained. The sage can withstand dry conditions and is very resistant to drought once well-established. Mulch around its base during harsh winters as it is sensitive to winter moisture associated with cold temperatures (it is hardy down to about -8°C (17.6°F)). When planting, provide it with a base fertilizer. Ensure the plant does not lack water. After heavy winter frosts in March, prune it by half, to 30-40 cm (1 to 12in). Apply a general fertilizer every year in spring.
