Description

Iris Royal Intrigue is a tall Bearded Iris, reaching 95cm (37in) high with numerous deep purple flowers (8 to 10 per stem). Its flowers are very large and subtly fragrant.

Everyone knows Iris germanica, which has become world famous thanks to the paintings of Van Gogh and Monet. It owes its popularity to its unique design.

Its wide, rigid, sword-shaped leaves contrast with crumpled, multicoloured flowers perched high up. The flowers form three large upright petals and three silky, trailing sepals, called "beards". The flowering period lasts a few weeks in May/June. This Iris has large, fleshy rhizomes that creep along the ground. It thrives in light, warm, and well-drained soils. It does not mind cold or summer drought; its enemy is moisture, especially in heavy soils. Gorgeous in a sunny flowerbed, it is also loved for flower arrangements.

It should be placed in full sun, in dry and well-drained soil.

Place Iris Royal Intrigue in a flowerbed or border, alongside yarrow, alliums, stipas, or roses. It is best to plant them in groups of 3 or on their own, instead of creating uniform iris beds.

Planting and care

Iris Royal Intrigue should be planted shallowly, with the rhizome exposed at ground level. Add sand when the soil is too heavy or too wet, and place the rhizomes on small mounds. Ensure good drainage to prevent the iris from rotting. During summer, this iris should be watered once or twice a month. After flowering, they should be pruned by cutting the flower stems to 10 cm (4in) above the ground. Damaged leaves should only be removed in autumn. It is not recommended to provide too much nitrogen as it weakens the plant and increases the number of leaves at the expense of flowers and taller flower stalks become brittle. Iris can be susceptible to heterosporiosis, a disease identified by oval brown spots. To prevent it, treat with Bordeaux mixture at the beginning of the growing season. Every 4 years after flowering in summer, divide the clumps by pulling up the entire plant and transplanting the most beautiful young plants from the rhizome, usually those from the outer edge to a location that has been without irises for a year.
