Description

Iris ‘Dazzle Me’ is a Lilliput garden iris very low, but brightly coloured, with apricot petals, black cherry sepals edged with apricot and cream beards tipped with mandarin. Very low, it sits at eye level in a rock garden, at the edge of a low wall or in a trough. Although close to the ground, its spring flowering does not go unnoticed.

'Dazzle Me’ belongs to the group of standard dwarf bearded iris, marketed in France as Lilliput iris. This category includes small iris that fall between miniature iris and medium bearded iris; they flower early in the bearded iris season, before the long flowering period of tall bearded iris. At 25 cm in height when in flower, ‘Dazzle Me’ is one of the lowest in the group. The plant grows from a fleshy rootstock visible on the soil surface. This rootstock lengthens slowly and, over the years, forms a compact clump of narrow, erect, glaucous green leaves. Each flower is composed of three erect petals and three trailing sepals. In ‘Dazzle Me’, the petals are apricot, the sepals are highly contrasting: their reddish-black centre is broadly edged with apricot. The beards are cream-white, with mandarin tips. The fragrance is slightly musky, perceptible when you bury your nose in the flower. The stems carry few buds, but the plant is very vigorous. Flowering occurs in April or May depending on the climate.

'Dazzle Me’ is an American introduction by Lynda Miller, registered in 2000 under seedling number 11098 and introduced in 2001 by Miller’s Manor Garden. It comes from the cross ‘Black Cherry Delight’ × ‘Pele’. This introduction received an Honorable Mention from the American Iris Society in 2004.

Around this small iris ‘Dazzle Me’, companion plants should be placed at a distance from the rootstocks so that its stump is not deprived of sunlight. Its colouring goes well with fresh blues, whites and silvery foliage. Choose for example the Iris pumila ‘Sea Fire’, light blue, the variety  ‘Dream Stuff’, pure white, the Allium karataviense ‘Ivory Queen’, squat, ivory white, and the Festuca glauca ‘Intense Blue’, in small bluish tufts.

Planting and care

The Iris ‘Dazzle Me’ is planted from July to October as a rootstock, or in spring and autumn for potted young plants, outside of frost periods. Plant it in full sun, in soil loosened to a depth of 20 cm, with gravel if the soil retains water in winter. Place the rootstock almost on the surface, with roots spread out in the soil; its top must remain visible. Water well at planting, then only during dry periods in the first few weeks. A light application of mature compost around the clump is sufficient in poor soil. Divide the clumps every three or four years, in summer, when the flowering decreases in the centre of the stump.
