Description

Daylily, or Hemerocallis 'Silver King', produces enormous flowers with crinkled, lemon-yellow, very pale petals. It is a beautiful, bright, early and perpetual flowering daylily. This daylily has a good vigorous growth. It is a problem-free plant, guaranteed to succeed. If you like exuberant flowering with exotic looks, invite it into your garden today!

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Liliaceae family. These are perennial and hardy plants with deciduous or semi-evergreen foliage. This variety resulting from horticultural work forms a beautiful clump that will reach 70 cm (28 in) in height, with a spread of 70 cm (28 in), possibly more if the soil suits it. The flowers measure about 20 cm (8 in) in diameter, which is a significant size even among daylilies. The particularly bright colour of 'Silver King' adds an additional character to the already remarkable flowering. Individually, daylilies, as their name indicates, last no more than a day, but they renew themselves continuously over a beautiful period between June and August. Feel free to make beautiful bouquets with them. The foliage is linear and deciduous, and it is a plant with short rhizomes and fleshy roots.

These perennials are very easy to grow and thrive in both shade and sun. Some of them can be slightly invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, after flowering in autumn. The daylily is often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of its vibrant colours and its ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to its lack of modesty: it displays a beautiful exuberance that goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps in the background of your flower beds. The bright flowers of 'Silver King' can be successfully paired with other blue or pink flowers, for example. Consider summer-flowering bulbs and the supple habit of grasses to lighten up your flower beds. If you want to enhance balconies and terraces with a daylily, you need to use large pots of at least 30 cm (12 in) in depth and should opt for dwarf varieties. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and garnish desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Silver King' in good, not too clayey garden soil that is enriched with humus and compost. In these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance to summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, so there is no need to treat it and rodents are not interested in it. Daylilies thrive in both shade and sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight being sufficient. Plant by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2 in) below the surface. If you plant multiple plants, do not place them too closely to each other as the gaps will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, it is a good idea to keep the soil moderately moist. Divide the clumps preferably in autumn, after flowering.
