More information

These flowers have big, pastel-coloured blooms that are unique and beautiful. They grow on a deciduous herbaceous perennial, which means that the plant's leaves fall off every year, but they come back in the spring. The plant starts growing upright, but the long, fine foliage eventually trails down. The bright medium green color of the leaves adds a lush and verdant touch to any garden. From June to July, the plant produces star-shaped flowers that can grow up to 15 cm (6in) in diameter. These flowers have pale salmon-pink petals with delicately wavy edges and a lemon-yellow centre. The plant is called a day lily and is very versatile. It needs very little maintenance, making it perfect for gardens. You can plant it in borders, flower beds, or pots. It can grow in any type of soil, whether it's clay or not, and can handle drought. It does best in full sun or partial shade.

Description

The 'Hazel Monette' Daylily is a variety with considerable flowers in an uncommon pastel colour! A deciduous herbaceous perennial, it presents an upright clump that trails with delicate and long foliage of a bright medium green, bringing a verdant touch to garden compositions. From June to July, it is adorned with star-shaped flowers that can reach up to 15 cm (6in) in diameter, with pale salmon-pink petals with delicately undulate margins, enhanced by a lemon yellow centre. Daylilies are versatile plants, perfect for borders, flowerbeds or pots in low-maintenance gardens. Hardy and tolerant of clay and drought, plant it in all types of soil in full sun or partial shade.

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the family of daylilies, close to the lily family. They are perennial and hardy plants with deciduous or semi-evergreen foliage. 'Hazel Monette', introduced in 1973 by Monette, reaches a height of 60 cm (24in) and a width of 50 cm (20in). The flowers are large, measuring 15 cm (6in) in diameter, with a reasonably open star shape. Individually, they last only a day but continuously repeat flower between June and July. Daylilies have short rhizomes and fleshy roots. The stems are sturdy and allow for beautiful bouquets. The foliage is linear and semi-evergreen. Daylilies have short rhizomes and fleshy roots, tolerating dry soils but being more lush and floriferous in cool, rich, deep soils well-exposed to the sun.

Very easily cultivated, these plants thrive in both shade and sun. Some can be invasive, so don't hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. Daylilies are often called "the perfect perennial plant" due to their vibrant colours, ability to tolerate any environment, and lack of modesty, as they are exuberant and blend well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps in the background of your flowerbeds. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside daylilies. 'Hazel Monette' will fit perfectly into the decor of a romantic garden, with blue, pink, and white flowering perennials such as campanulas, penstemons, perennial flaxes, or phlox. Large pots of at least 30 cm (12in) deep on a balcony or terrace should be used, choosing from dwarf varieties. Their exoticism and the luxuriance of their foliage are ideal in a border or for a pond or lake, accompanied by plants with contrasting round or divided foliage, such as marsh marigolds or loosestrifes. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.

Many varieties have been developed in Japan, where they are very popular. The flowers of these plants come in a wide variety of colours and shapes. Over 60,000 cultivars, primarily resulting from hybridization by gardening enthusiasts, are listed, appreciated, and studied by international Hemerocallis societies.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Hazel Monette' in well-draining garden soil that is not too clayey and enriched with humus and compost. This will allow your perennial to withstand summer droughts and winter frosts. This variety is easy to grow and not susceptible to pests or diseases, so no treatment is required, and rodents are not attracted to it. Daylilies can grow both in partial shade and full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight sufficient—plant by burying the base 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface. If planting multiple plants, ensure enough space between them, as the spaces will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, ensure the soil is moderately moist, but do not overwater. It is advisable to divide the plants, preferably in autumn after flowering.
