Description

The Perennial Geranium 'Sabani Blue' is a fantastic novelty that combines many qualities. Its intense purplish-blue flowering, streaked with purple, truly dominates a tuft of exuberant foliage. It is a good hardy perennial, able to withstand all types of soil. It offers an amazing spectacle early in the season and for at least two months, from a young age. It quickly forms an imposing and dense mass, with sturdy foliage. A plant with an intrepid and generous character, suitable for all gardens.

Geranium 'Sabani Blue' belongs to the Geraniaceae family. It is a recently obtained hybrid in Scotland, resulting from the cross-breeding of Geranium ibericum and Geranium libani. Its two parents have passed on their ground-covering character, floribundity, and resistance to difficult conditions. 'Sabani Blue' has a bushy tufted habit, wider than it is tall, 50 cm (20in) in height with a spread that will increase over time due to its rapid growth. It blooms from a young age, starting in May, for at least two months and sometimes until September. At the top of branched stems, the flowers appear in dense clusters. The corolla, with a diameter of 20 to 25 mm (1in), is purplish-blue with a white spot in the center, and the petals are marked with fine purple veins, with the dark anthers standing out. The foliage is semi-evergreen, composed of large lobed and toothed leaves, bluish-green in color, almost all along the sturdy and hairy stems.

Like many other perennial geraniums, 'Sabani Blue' is a superb and very useful plant, providing nectar and pollen for numerous insects such as butterflies, bees, bumblebees, etc. It is an ideal variety for a cottage garden, in borders, along pathways, even on difficult slopes. It will quickly add a colourful touch to simple perennial beds. It will also be a good companion for columbines, peonies, lupines, bellflowers, poppies, and other tall daisies.

Planting and care

The perennial geranium 'Sabani Blue' appreciates full sun or partial shade. Plant it in any type of soil, early in spring or autumn, by adding a layer of drainage. Water it at the beginning to help the young plants establish. It is not afraid of winter cold if it is not in overly moist soil. In heavy soil, incorporate leaf compost or coarse sand into your garden soil. You can remove faded flowers to encourage re-blooming. It is possible to divide clumps every three years in spring. This easy-going plant requires little maintenance. It only requires a small clean-up before the start of vegetation, at the end of winter.
