Description

The crown forms a large creeping rootstock just below the surface of the soil.

The deciduous, ovate, wide, beautiful bright green, shiny and strongly puckered leaves, are halfway between those of hydrangea and bergenia.

The white flowers resemble large forget-me-nots and are carried by strong stalks.

Planting and care

A superb perennial plant with varying advice regarding its cultivation. After several unsuccessful attempts, we have been growing them in our garden for 10 years and now know their needs. They need semi-shade, in soil that is rich, moist, and very well-drained. Excess moisture in winter is fatal. They are happy in a shady rock garden, in humus-rich soil without limestone. They do not tolerate temperatures below -10°C (14°F), but you can easily dig up the crowns, put them in pots, and bring them indoors in winter to a bright, unheated but frost-free room. In this case, stop watering for 2 or even 3 months, then take the plant back outside in March.
