Description

Ivy-leaved Geranium or Pelargonium 'Summertime Mix' seeds make it easy to grow this floriferous plant with a trailing habit, perfect for brightening up balconies, windows and planters throughout the summer. It is distinguished by its flexible stems adorned with glossy, bright green leaves and its generous inflorescences in umbels, presented in a harmonious mix of white, pink and red. Grown as an annual, this tender pelargonium prefers sunny positions, well-drained soil and a warm, dry atmosphere. It offers a strong visual impact in hanging baskets or containers. Regular feeding and moderate watering encourage its continuous flowering.

The Ivy-leaved Geranium 'Summertime Mix', derived from Pelargonium x peltatum, is a horticultural cultivar belonging to the Geraniaceae family, also known as Trailing Geranium, Cascade Geranium. Native to the coastal and mountainous regions of the Western Cape in South Africa, this species grows naturally on well-drained rocky slopes. Introduced to Europe in the early 18th century, it has given rise to many ornamental cultivars. 'Summertime Mix' is distinguished by its trailing and bushy habit, with flexible stems that can reach up to 1 metre in length. Its evergreen, glossy and lobed leaves are reminiscent of ivy. Growth is rapid, with a height of 35 cm and a similar spread. The flowers, grouped in umbels, present a wide colour palette: white, pink, red, and appear from spring to autumn. They are generally scentless and attract various pollinators. The root system is fasciculate, adapted to well-drained soils. A historical anecdote: the name 'Pelargonium' derives from the Greek 'pelargos', meaning stork, in reference to the shape of the fruit which resembles the bird's beak.

Suspended from sunny balconies or spilling over from summer containers, the Ivy-leaved Geranium 'Summertime Mix' creates colourful cascades that enliven the façade like an impressionist touch. Its flexible habit and bright flowers pair wonderfully with the lightness of Lobelia erinus ‘White Cascade’, the silky contrasts of Bidens ferulifolia ‘Golden Eye’, or the silvery foliage of Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’. One can imagine it edging a south-facing terrace, accompanied by calibrachoas and 'Night Sky' petunias, for a vibrant and generous hanging garden.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Sow from mid-January to mid-March.

Sow the Summertime Mix ivy-leaved geranium seeds in trays, pots, etc., in a special sowing compost. Enclose the pots in a propagator or place them in a warm spot to maintain an optimal temperature of 20-25°C. Sowing depth: 1.5 mm. Germination can take 3 to 21 days. Provide an equivalent temperature day and night for best results.

Transplant the young plants when they are large enough to handle. Harden off the young plants and plant them out once all risk of frost has passed, spacing them 30cm apart. Choose a very sunny location.

Growing:

You can plant your ivy-leaved geraniums in the ground or in pots. If you wish to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (petunias can tolerate a light late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-grow them in pots in a warm, bright spot to accelerate their growth.

The geraniums will flower from June to October. Plant them in a sunny or partially shaded position, sheltered from the wind. They require a light, humus-bearing but, above all, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the start of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during periods of intense summer heat. Geraniums are not frost-hardy (minimum -2°C).

Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry feeders. We advise feeding them with a liquid geranium fertiliser once or twice a week during the growth period. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking attractive and to prolong the flowering.
