Lettuce Eluarde et Panisse - Lactuca sativa

A mix of red and green Oak Leaf lettuces, 'Eluarde' and 'Panisse'. The 'Eluarde' Oak Leaf is a compact variety with intensely red, flexible and finely cut leaves. Its well-filled heart is dense and healthy. 'Panisse', on the other hand, produces appetizing, large and firm heads of lettuce with a lime green color. The broad, thick and glossy leaves have a subtle hazelnut flavor. These lettuces are easy to grow in the vegetable garden. They can be harvested from spring to autumn by cutting the leaves above the collar.

Lettuce is one of the most popular vegetables (4.2 kilograms per person per year) due to its freshness, crunchiness, and taste. It can be enjoyed raw in salads or cooked, for example, to accompany peas.

As the ultimate leafy vegetable, Lettuce is an annual plant that belongs to the large Asteraceae family. Its Latin name, Lactuca sativa, refers both to the white sap (lactuca) that oozes when cut and to the fact that it is cultivated (sativa).

It is an essential vegetable in any respectable vegetable garden, and there are so many varieties that it can be grown almost all year round.

Lettuce cultivation is easy as long as the planting calendar for each variety is respected. Its growth is rapid, and it thrives in any soil as long as it is rich and remains moist.

Harvest: It is simply done with a knife when it reaches ripeness.

Storage: Lettuce can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator, but to enjoy it at its freshest, we recommend consuming it immediately after harvesting.

Gardener's tip: During hot summer temperatures, lettuces exposed to direct sunlight tend to wilt. To prevent this, consider protecting them from intense rays by using inverted crates. In our garden, summer lettuces are not grown in rows but are interspersed throughout: at the base of climbing beans, in the middle of cucumbers and squash plants, whose foliage provides beneficial shade.
